RIO DE JANEIRO -- With her arms raised in victory, coach Silvia Neid ran onto the field to join the celebration of Germanys first Olympic gold medal -- even jumping onto the players dogpile. What a way to go out.Dzsenifer Marozsan scored early in the second half Friday and Germany went on to give Neid a 2-1 victory over Sweden for the nations first Olympic title in womens soccer.Neid, a two-time FIFA Womens Coach of the Year, is stepping down following the Rio Olympics. The win at the iconic Maracana Stadium gave her one more championship to cap her 11-year career as Germanys coach. What I felt was pure joy, because I know that was what we had earned and what we have worked so hard for, Neid said.Sweden, which upset the three-time defending champion United States on penalties in the quarterfinals, earned the silver medal for its best finish in the Olympic tournament since the sport joined the program in 1996. The Swedes also defeated Brazil on penalties in the semifinals, disappointing the host nations fans.I think we actually won the silver medal rather than losing the gold, Sweden coach Pia Sundhage said.Earlier in the day, Canada defeated host Brazil 2-1 for the bronze medal in Sao Paulo. The Canadians also won the bronze at the London Games.Germany and Sweden were playing in the gold-medal match for the first time. It was also the Olympics first all-European final.Germany goalkeeper Almuth Schult gave piggy-back rides to her fellow players in the post-game celebration. Forward Anja Mittag held the jersey of teammate Simone Laudehr, who was injured in the tournaments opening match, during the medal ceremony. This is definitely a new summit for German womens football, Neid said. The German mens team is also playing in a gold-medal match at the Maracana, facing host Brazil on Saturday. Its the first time one nation has had both its teams in the final. The German women went into Fridays match with a tournament-leading 11 goals, paced by Melanie Behringer with five.Germany had the better chances in the first half, including Mittags rebound in the 25th minute that went just wide of the net. Lotta Schelins blast three minutes later sailed over the goal and the match was scoreless at the break.Marozsans goal in the 48th sailed between two defenders and into the top-right corner, just beyond the outstretched fingertips of Sweden goalkeeper Hedvig Lindahl.Marozsans free kick in the 62nd minute hit the post and rebounded off Swedens Linda Sembrant for an own-goal, giving Germany a 2-0 advantage. But the Swedes narrowed it in the 67th on Stina Blackstenius sliding goal in front of Schult. In the previous two matches, Sweden hunkered down on defense -- drawing criticism from U.S. goalkeeper Hope Solo -- but Sundhage had her team attack more against Germany. Its different to play against the U.S. and Brazil -- and Germany -- you have to look at the differences, Sundhage said. We felt we were stronger and had more speed against the Germans, so it was the game plan at the very beginning.Neid announced last year that she would step down following the Rio de Janeiro Games, making way for assistant Steffi Jones to take over as coach. Neid will take on a new role as a scout. Its very easy for me to hand of the reins to somebody else. Its completely different when you decide yourself when to stop, she said. I would like to hand over a good team to Steffi Jones. We are in very good shape now weve worked very hard and that is the most important thing.Neid scored 48 goals in 111 games as a player for the German national team from 1982-96. She was an assistant on Germanys team that won the 2003 World Cup, then took over as coach of the senior women in 2005, leading the team to another World Cup title in 2007. She was named FIFA Womens Coach of the Year for 2010 and 2013.Sundhages contract is up Dec. 31, and she has not given an indication of what she might do. Shes had an equally illustrious coaching career, winning gold medals with U.S. national team at both the Beijing and London Games. She led the Americans to the final match of the 2011 World Cup, but the team fell on penalties to Japan. She returned home to coach Sweden in 2013.Germany also defeated Sweden 2-1 on a golden goal to win the 2003 Womens World Cup, which was held in the United States because of the SARS outbreak in China.Neid said for 34 years she has been a player, an assistant or a coach. Now I want to do something else, she said through a translator. I want to keep on learning other things. I want to do something different.---This story has been corrected to show the Germany goalkeepers name is Almuth Schult, not Alumuth Schelt. Cairo Santos Jersey Store . The Americans, skipped by John Shuster, seized the advantage in the eighth end by scoring five points for a 7-3 lead. The Czechs pulled two back in the ninth, but Shusters team of third Jeff Isaacson, second Jared Zezel and lead John Landsteiner ended with another point to secure the last Olympic berth on offer. NASSAU, Bahamas -- Even with the wind at his back, Tiger Woods figured only a perfect 5-iron from 231 yards would reach the green. Adding to this challenge was he had taken only four full swings in competition over the past 466 days.He posed over the swing until he saw it land 233 yards away, bouncing over the third green at Albany Golf Club. A pitch-and-run and a tap-in later, he had his birdie and was on his way Thursday in his return to golf at the Hero World Challenge. To hit it that flush that early in the round, that felt good, gave me a little confidence, Woods said. I had to step on it to get it there, and I did. To find the feel of the round that quick, that felt good.Just like that, he felt as if he hadnt been away for the last 15 months. He just couldnt get off the course without a few mistakes costing him a lot of strokes.Woods made two double bogeys over his last three holes for a 1-over 73, leaving him nine shots behind J.B. Holmes and one shot better than Justin Rose, the only player who had a worse score. No one was sure what to expect from Woods, who took the longest break of his golfing life following a pair of back surgeries that made him wonder at times if he had played his last golf tournament. Now, all he can think about is the next round.Weve got three more days, Woods said. Wind is supposed to pump on the weekend, and Ill be playing a little bit better.Heres what he can build upon:DRIVING: Woods hit only six of 13 fairways, though only one of them was bad enough to cause a problem. Woods pulled his tee shot into the water on the 18th, slamming his driver into the turf. All of his misses were to the left, some of them just catching the sandy waste area.Thats the hardest thing in changing equipment, Woods said. The shots arent the same, so my misses are a little bit different. He hit plenty of good drives, particularly on the first two par 5s. On both he hit a tight draw.MISTAKES: Albany is the type of course that punishes mistakes.Woods tried to hug the left side of the fairway on No. 9, with the wind coming out of the left toward the water,, and it stayed there into the dunes.dddddddddddd. That led to his first bogey, though the culprit was a flubbed chip into the grain and up the slope, and it came back down the hill. His second shot out of the sandy waste area on No. 11 was flared out to the right and into a bush. Woods had to take a penalty shot for an unplayable lie and made bogey. His worst shot was his approach from the 16th fairway that he pulled into a bush. He did well to hack that backward to the fairway, and he hit a poor pitch that rolled out some 30 feet by the hole.Just made some really silly mistakes, mistakes I dont normally make, Woods said. But I havent played in a while. Unfortunately, I made those mistakes. I can clean that up.CHIPPING: There remains a fascination with his short game, particularly because of how bad he was at the start of 2015 in the Phoenix Open and Torrey Pines, so bad that he took two month off to work on it.It was a mixed bag on Thursday.Woods hit a beautiful pitch-and-run from 30 yards for an easy birdie on No. 3, and a chunk-and-run from a tough spot below the fourth green. And on the par-5 sixth, his flop shot from 40 yards away settled 5 feet away for the start of three straight birdies that gave him a share of the lead, but only briefly. But he flubbed the chip on No. 9 (bogey), had a simple pitch on the 16th that rolled out 30 feet, and his pitch from right of the 18th green hit the pin halfway up, indicating it was too strong.THE OUTLOOK: The score shows Woods was one of only two players who couldnt break par. Two swings effectively cost him four shots. Woods was looking more at what could have been than what was.It could have been something really good, Woods said. I got off to a nice, solid start and made a few mistakes there. I didnt play the par 5s very well in the middle part of the round and consequently, got it going the wrong way. ... But all in all, I feel pretty good. Im looking forward to another three more days. ' ' '
